Habsburg and Bourbon Spain

Ciudad Rodrigo

Today: Spain

Years
1492–1833
Role
Fortified town between Salamanca and Portugal

In the 15th and 16th centuries the town enjoyed a boom as a residence of the nobility, and most of the monuments, palaces, churches and noble houses that survive were built then. The 17th century and the first years of the 18th were a time of decline, with wars such as the Portuguese Restoration War. As a fortified town between Portugal and Salamanca it suffered the sieges of 1810 and 1812, and the damage can still be seen.
