Coria

Today: Spain

Years
1492–1833
Role
Episcopal city under the lordship of the house of Alba

From the end of the 15th century the house of Alba held the civil government of Coria, shared with the bishopric, whose revenues were among the most coveted in the Crown of Castile. That prosperity lasted until 1607, the year of greatest wealth, and the Portuguese Restoration War, from 1640, ruined its fields. The Lisbon earthquake of 1755 damaged the cathedral, and in 1809 the French occupation sacked the city.
