The Gothic cathedral with a single nave under star vaulting, begun in 1498 on the site of the demolished Romanesque church and regarded as finished around 1748. It has Plateresque additions, to designs by Pedro de Ybarra, and a Baroque bell tower by Manuel de Lara Churriguera; the high altarpiece is of 1747. The Lisbon earthquake of 1755 seriously damaged it.
