The Hieronymite house founded in 1402 to which Charles V retired after abdicating. In 1556 its buildings were enlarged to house the emperor and his retinue, and he died there on 21 September 1558. French troops burned the convent in 1809 and its reconstruction began in 1949; it can be visited today, including the emperor's apartments, and a community of monks of the Order of Saint Paul the First Hermit lives there.

We count visits ourselves, with no cookies and nothing stored on your device. To count people rather than clicks, we keep a one-way code derived from your connection and browser for at most 48 hours and then delete it; what remains is totals per page that identify no one. We never store your IP. We also use Plausible, analytics hosted in the European Union that likewise sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device, to learn which sites send readers here and how many searches are run, never what is searched for.
