A castle built on the south-east corner of the town wall, which Álvaro de Luna raised for the most part from 1444 and Beltrán de la Cueva began to fortify in 1465. The Dukes of Alburquerque turned it into a palace: between 1552 and 1557 the wall-walk of the south front was replaced by a gallery, in 1559 Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón built the Renaissance gallery of the parade ground, and in 1569 the Escalera Real was finished. It houses a secondary school, and part of it is visited on dramatised tours.

We count visits ourselves, with no cookies and nothing stored on your device. To count people rather than clicks, we keep a one-way code derived from your connection and browser for at most 48 hours and then delete it; what remains is totals per page that identify no one. We never store your IP. We also use Plausible, analytics hosted in the European Union that likewise sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device, to learn which sites send readers here and how many searches are run, never what is searched for.
