The bastioned fortress begun in 1552 on the south shore of the mouth of Mahón harbour, which Juan Bautista Calvi redesigned from 1554, one of the first of its kind in Spain. The British strengthened it; the Franco-Spanish army demolished it in 1782, the British rebuilt part of it in 1798 and Charles IV ordered it demolished again in 1805. Ruins and underground galleries remain today, and part of them has been opened to the public.

To count people rather than clicks, we keep a one-way code derived from your connection and browser for at most 48 hours and then delete it; what remains is totals per page that identify no one. We never store your IP. We also use Plausible, analytics hosted in the European Union that likewise sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device, to learn which sites send readers here and how many searches are run, never what is searched for.
