Habsburg and Bourbon Spain
Villacarlos
Today: Es Castell, Spain
- Years
- 1802–1833
- Role
- Town beside the castle of San Felipe
The main settlement was founded by the British in 1771 as Georgetown, in honour of George III; when Spain recovered the island in 1782 it was renamed Real Villa de San Carlos, after Charles III, later shortened to Villacarlos. The British returned in 1798 to rebuild the castle of San Felipe and to call the village Georgetown again, until Menorca went back to Spain in 1802. As a municipality it split from Mahón in the second half of the 19th century and appeared in the censuses as Villacarlos until 1981.
