The Franciscan convent that Beltrán Ladrón de Guevara, lord of Escalante, founded in 1441 on the island of Montehano, beside the Santoña marshes, on the site of a chapel of Nuestra Señora del Monte. A reform of the 17th century means that most of its architecture today dates from that century; Bárbara Blomberg, mother of Don Juan de Austria, was buried there in 1597. It passed into private hands with the disentailment of 1835 and has been occupied by the Capuchins since 1879.
