The fortress of the harbour of Fornells, whose building was decided after Barbarossa's sack of Mahón and the pirate attack on Ciudadela in 1558, raised between 1625 and 1671 (by 1662 it was ready for defence). The settlement that became the village grew up beside it. The Spanish dismantled it in 1782, after British rule, and only a few remains survive.
