Habsburg and Bourbon Spain

Fornells

Today: Spain

Years
1802–1833
Role
Harbour village that grew beside a castle

Fornells grew out of the castle of San Antonio, whose building was decided after Barbarossa's sack of Mahón and the pirate attack on Ciudadela in 1558 and which by 1662 was ready for defence. A suburb formed beside the castle, the origin of the old village: the first houses date from between 1630 and 1640, and by 1713 it had more than 100 inhabitants, soldiers and their families who came from the castle of San Felipe. In 1801 and 1802 the British added the defence tower.
