- City of the Kingdom of Granada and episcopal see
On 30 December 1489 the city was handed over to the Castilians, although the true conquest came in September 1490, and the Catholic Monarchs granted it its coat of arms in 1497. The great mosque began to be demolished around 1500 to build the cathedral, and squares such as the plaza Mayor were opened, with the jail and the Casa de los Corregidores. The palace of Villalegre also dates from the Christian city of the 16th century.
