Guernica
Today: Guernica y Luno, Spain
- Years
- 1492–1833
- Role
- Town of the Juntas Generales of Vizcaya
The town, founded in 1366 on land of the anteiglesia of Luno, kept its municipal life almost unchanged through the 16th and 17th centuries, with fires in 1521 and 1537, and in the 18th century it had 749 regular houses, a square with the town hall, a prison for the whole lordship and a hospital. The Juntas Generales of Vizcaya met there under the tree, and the kings of Castile had to swear the fueros «under the Tree» to be lords of Vizcaya. Its quarrels with Luno over boundaries lasted until the two were united in 1882.
