The bastioned circuit that Felipe II had raised on Dalt Vila against Turkish attacks and Barbary pirates, the work of the Italian engineer Giovanni Battista Calvi from 1555. It forms an irregular heptagon with a bastion at each corner, and that of Santa Tecla is the highest point of the city; the Porta del Mar, finished in 1585, carries the shield of Felipe II. The bastions and their esplanades can be walked, and it has been part of a UNESCO-listed site since 1999.

We count visits ourselves, with no cookies and nothing stored on your device. To count people rather than clicks, we keep a one-way code derived from your connection and browser for at most 48 hours and then delete it; what remains is totals per page that identify no one. We never store your IP. We also use Plausible, analytics hosted in the European Union that likewise sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device, to learn which sites send readers here and how many searches are run, never what is searched for.
