Ibiza

Today: Spain

Years
1492–1833
Role
Walled city, episcopal see from 1782

Ibiza was fortified by Felipe II against Ottoman raids and Barbary pirates: the Italian engineer Giovanni Battista Calvi worked on its walls from 1555 and the circuit was finished at the end of the 16th century. In 1782 Pope Pius VI created the see of Ibiza and the church of Santa María became the cathedral. The walled old town, Dalt Vila, has been a UNESCO site since 1999.

To count people rather than clicks, we keep a one-way code derived from your connection and browser for at most 48 hours and then delete it; what remains is totals per page that identify no one. We never store your IP. We also use Plausible, analytics hosted in the European Union that likewise sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device, to learn which sites send readers here and how many searches are run, never what is searched for.
