Habsburg and Bourbon Spain

Jerez de los Caballeros

Today: Spain

Years
1492–1833
Role
Town of the Order of Santiago's province of León

The 16th century was a time of growth: monumental buildings multiplied and, between about 1523 and 1526, Carlos I gave it the title of Very Noble and Very Loyal City; 172 of its people, Vasco Núñez de Balboa among them, took part in the conquest of America. The 17th and 18th centuries were a time of decline and poverty, made worse by Portugal's independence in 1640, and the Portuguese invaded the town in 1706, 1710 and 1711.

To count people rather than clicks, we keep a one-way code derived from your connection and browser for at most 48 hours and then delete it; what remains is totals per page that identify no one.
