Habsburg and Bourbon Spain

La Calahorra

Today: Spain

Years
1492–1833
Role
Town of the marquisate of Cenete

In December 1489 the leader Cidi Yahya El Nayar handed La Calahorra and other places of the Zenete over to the Christians. In the early 16th century Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar y Mendoza raised his castle there, and in the Alpujarras revolt of 1568 to 1571 the Christians took refuge in it. Apart from what concerns the castle, the article finds little news of the place after the expulsion of the Moriscos; the church of the Anunciación was built in 1546.
