The cathedral that replaced the Seo Vieja, which became barracks when Philip V's troops took the city in 1707. It was built between 1761 and 1781 on the site of the old pósito (municipal grain store), with gifts from Charles III, Bishop Joaquín Sánchez and the townspeople themselves, to a plan by the military architect Pedro Martín Cermeño and under the direction of Francesco Sabatini. It was sacked and burnt in 1808, burned again in 1936 and was restored between 1940 and 1955.
