Role
Provincial capital, with its Paeria

Capital of the province and of the Segrià, governed by its Paeria since 1264 and home to an Estudio General that stayed active until 1717. The Bourbon siege of 1707 destroyed most of the city to build the citadel, and with the Nueva Planta decree of 1714 it lost its fueros and its university. The Old Cathedral became barracks and, under Charles III, the New Cathedral was built.

To count people rather than clicks, we keep a one-way code derived from your connection and browser for at most 48 hours and then delete it; what remains is totals per page that identify no one. We also use Plausible, analytics hosted in the European Union that likewise sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device, to learn which sites send readers here and how many searches are run, never what is searched for.
