Role
Town of the Duke of Lerma

Since the Middle Ages the town has been a compulsory stop on the Cañada Real Burgalesa, and its growth is tied to the patronage of Francisco de Sandoval y Rojas, 1st Duke of Lerma and favourite of Felipe III. The town was to the courtly Valladolid (1601 to 1606) what El Escorial was to Madrid. The duke founded several convents there from 1604 and a collegiate church consecrated in 1617.
