Habsburg and Bourbon Spain

Lorca

Today: Spain

Years
1492–1833
Role
Border city opening to the valley

A frontier city facing the Nasrid kingdom, it spilled out of its walls into the valley once the war of Granada ended. Work on the collegiate church of San Patricio began in 1533 and ran to 1780; the doorway of the Guevara palace is dated 1694. Under the Bourbon reforms of the 18th century it lost its medieval character and the wall disappeared, and in 1802 the breaking of the Puentes reservoir destroyed the lower part of Lorca.
