Years
1492–1833
Role
Walled city and episcopal seat, provincial capital from 1833

Lugo, a walled city with the cathedral begun in 1129, enjoyed a certain boom in the early modern period, although Mondoñedo and Ribadeo disputed its primacy. The Offering of the Kingdom of Galicia to the Sacrament was established in 1669, and in 1754 the city was granted the San Froilán fairs. The provincial division of 1833 named it provincial capital, chiefly because of how central the walled city is.
