The obelisk raised in memory of the people of Madrid who died in the rising of 2 May 1808, on the very spot where Murat had many of them shot. Isidro González Velázquez designed it, winning the competition of 1820; its first stone was laid on 21 April 1821, work stopped when absolutism returned, resumed in 1836, and it was unveiled on 2 May 1840; in 1842 the remains of Daoiz and Velarde were buried in it. Since 1985 it has been dedicated to all who fell for Spain, with a flame that always burns, and it is seen from the plaza de la Lealtad.
