Years

Role
Seat of the court from 1561

In June 1561, when the town had some 20,000 people, Felipe II moved the court from Toledo to Madrid, and from then on it grew fast; apart from the five years the court spent in Valladolid, from 1601 to 1606, it has been the capital. Felipe IV ringed it with a new wall in 1625, and Carlos III, remembered as Madrid's best mayor, gave it sewers, street lighting and the promenades and buildings of the Prado.

To count people rather than clicks, we keep a one-way code derived from your connection and browser for at most 48 hours and then delete it; what remains is totals per page that identify no one. We also use Plausible, analytics hosted in the European Union that likewise sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device, to learn which sites send readers here and how many searches are run, never what is searched for.
