The observatory Juan de Villanueva designed on the San Blas hill, at the edge of the Buen Retiro, its first stone laid in 1790; it was almost finished in 1808, when French troops turned it into a powder store and it was badly damaged. It was restored under Isabel II. It houses the National Astronomical Observatory, which runs visits.

We count visits ourselves, with no cookies and nothing stored on your device. To count people rather than clicks, we keep a one-way code derived from your connection and browser for at most 48 hours and then delete it; what remains is totals per page that identify no one. We never store your IP. We also use Plausible, analytics hosted in the European Union that likewise sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device, to learn which sites send readers here and how many searches are run, never what is searched for.
