The post office the Marquis of La Ensenada proposed around 1750, built under the Frenchman Jaime Marquet on a scheme Ventura Rodríguez had drawn; most historians date the start of work to late 1760, and it was finished in 1768. It is the oldest building on the Puerta del Sol; its clock tower was added in the 19th century. After the Civil War it was the headquarters of the state security police, with cells in its basements, and since 1985 it has housed the presidency of the Madrid region.
