The palace the 13th Duchess of Alba commissioned from Juan Pedro Arnal in 1777 on the Buenavista hill, pulling down the 16th-century one. Two fires in 1795 and 1796 forced major alterations; in 1807 the city gave it to Godoy, and in 1816 it passed to the army. It is the Army headquarters, inside a fenced enclosure above the plaza de Cibeles.
