Role
Town at the foot of Montserrat, in whose municipality the monastery stands

The town, formed in the 14th century around the bridge and the prior's palace, grew markedly in the 17th century, with the Plaza Pública, the Casa de la Villa and the Font Gran, and had 1,341 inhabitants in 1787. Montserrat monastery stands in its municipality; Ferdinand the Catholic sent it 14 monks from Valladolid in 1493 and Napoleonic troops burned it in 1811 and 1812. Until 1984 the municipality was called simply Monistrol.
