Role
Town and county of the Guevara family, with a university

A lordship town that became a county, ruled by the Guevara family as vassals of the king of Castile, it was not incorporated into the province of Guipúzcoa until 1845. In 1540, by bull of Paul III, Bishop Rodrigo Mercado de Zuazola founded the University of the Holy Spirit, which came to have faculties of Law, Canon Law, Arts, Medicine and Theology. In 1652 the lawsuit to join Guipúzcoa ended, with the result that the county kept its independence.
