The cathedral was begun in the late 13th century on Visigothic and Hispano-Arab remains, with the Gothic tower and the Puerta de las Cadenas from that stage. The crossing was opened in the early 16th century on Pere Compte's designs, and in the 18th century the Communion chapel and the great sacristy, of 1723, were added. It is the seat of the diocese of Orihuela-Alicante.
