Orihuela
Today: Spain
- Years
- 1492–1833
- Role
- Episcopal and university seat
A city since 1437 and the second of the Kingdom of Valencia, it gained its cathedral in 1510 and its own diocese in 1564. In 1569 the pope gave the college of Santo Domingo full university rank, and its teaching opened in 1610. After the War of the Spanish Succession its weight declined: in 1737 Alicante, Elche and other places left its province to form that of Alicante, and in 1799 Orihuela lost its own province.
