The university building that Archbishop Fernando de Valdés Salas provided for in his will, from a design by Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón. In 1578 great changes were made that meant demolishing a good part of what had been built; the works were concluded in 1590 and the minor ones that followed, with the belfry, in 1609, and the university was inaugurated there on 21 September 1608. In 1765 floors began to be added for the library to plans by Manuel Reguera, and a fire in 1934 and the war of 1936 damaged the building.
