Oviedo, capital of the Principality of Asturias, which Juan I founded in 1388, was devastated by a fire in 1521, after which its street plan went from radial to orthogonal. Its university opened on 21 September 1608, and in 1808 the Junta General of the Principality declared itself sovereign and declared war on France. Still standing from the period are the cathedral tower, the university, the Toreno palace and the Hospicio of 1752.
