A Renaissance fortress that Felipe II ordered built in 1571, designed by the military engineer Giacomo Palearo with the viceroy Vespasiano Gonzaga y Colonna, on a five-pointed star plan with a bastion at each point. It is considered complete in 1645, and half-moons were added in 1685 and in the first half of the 18th century. It lost its military use in 1964; three of its five bastions survive, and it is now a park with buildings used for cultural events.

We count visits ourselves, with no cookies and nothing stored on your device. To count people rather than clicks, we keep a one-way code derived from your connection and browser for at most 48 hours and then delete it; what remains is totals per page that identify no one. We never store your IP. We also use Plausible, analytics hosted in the European Union that likewise sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device, to learn which sites send readers here and how many searches are run, never what is searched for.
