Pamplona
Today: Spain
- Years
- 1512–1833
- Role
- Capital of the Kingdom of Navarre
The city surrendered to the Castilian army on 25 July 1512 and remained the capital of the Kingdom of Navarre, now with viceroys; Felipe II ordered the Citadel built in 1571. From 1750 it modernised, with a new town hall, drinking water and a Neoclassical façade for the cathedral. Napoleon's troops held it from February 1808 to 31 October 1813, and in 1823 it was bombarded by the Hundred Thousand Sons of Saint Louis.
