Portugalete

Today: Spain

Years
1492–1833
Role
Outer port of Bilbao

From the end of the Middle Ages the port of Portugalete was the outlet for Castilian wool to Flanders, as the outer port of Bilbao, which from the 16th century and backed by the monarchy took that monopoly from it. The convent of Santa Clara, now a cultural centre, was built in 1614. In 1833, in the First Carlist War, the town was besieged by the supporters of Don Carlos, who withdrew before Espartero's troops.

To count people rather than clicks, we keep a one-way code derived from your connection and browser for at most 48 hours and then delete it; what remains is totals per page that identify no one. We also use Plausible, analytics hosted in the European Union that likewise sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device, to learn which sites send readers here and how many searches are run, never what is searched for.
