The fortress that Charles I had built to protect the gulf from pirates and the French: the article gives 1543 for the reworking visible from outside and 1552 for the order to build it. It was besieged and reworked in 1645 to 1659 and 1794 to 1795, and in 1813 the Napoleonic army blew up part of it. Today it is a ruined enclosure, open to the public since 1991 and the the Museum of the Citadel of Rosas since 2004; a later reconstruction destroyed part of the remains, according to the article.
