The cathedral begun beside the Old one: the first stone was laid in 1512, under Bishop Francisco de Bobadilla, and the work ended in 1733, in a late Gothic with Renaissance and Baroque parts. After the Lisbon earthquake of 1755 the dome had to be rebuilt and the tower lined with stone, and it still leans. Its south wall rests on the north wall of the Old Cathedral, which was not pulled down.
