Role
University city, provincial capital from 1833

The 16th century was the city's time of greatest splendour, in population and in university life, with the so-called School of Salamanca: it is reckoned to have had some 24,000 inhabitants and, around 1580, 6,500 students enrolled each year. In the 18th century an economic and cultural revival allowed the New Cathedral to be finished and the Baroque Plaza Mayor to be built. In 1833 the province of Salamanca was created and the city became its capital.
