A fortress and royal palace on the rock between the Eresma and Clamores rivers, recorded from the 12th century and built in large part under the Trastámara; the tower of Juan II dates from 1440 to 1465. The slate spires that give it its present silhouette are from Felipe II, who married Ana de Austria there in 1570, and in 1587 Francisco de Mora completed the main garden and other parts of the castle. A fire in 1862 destroyed the ceilings of the state rooms, which were rebuilt; it is now a museum and the General Military Archive, and the rooms and the tower can be visited.

We count visits ourselves, with no cookies and nothing stored on your device. To count people rather than clicks, we keep a one-way code derived from your connection and browser for at most 48 hours and then delete it; what remains is totals per page that identify no one. We never store your IP. We also use Plausible, analytics hosted in the European Union that likewise sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device, to learn which sites send readers here and how many searches are run, never what is searched for.
