The new cathedral that Carlos I ordered after the old one was destroyed in 1521, in the War of the Comunidades; Juan Gil de Hontañón signed the contract on 7 May 1524 and the first stone was laid on 8 June 1525. It went up in three stages, until 1685, in a late Gothic style well into the 16th century, and was begun at the west end rather than at the east. The stone spire of the tower dates from 1614, and the cathedral is visited together with the Episcopal Palace on a single ticket.

We count visits ourselves, with no cookies and nothing stored on your device. To count people rather than clicks, we keep a one-way code derived from your connection and browser for at most 48 hours and then delete it; what remains is totals per page that identify no one. We never store your IP. We also use Plausible, analytics hosted in the European Union that likewise sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device, to learn which sites send readers here and how many searches are run, never what is searched for.
