A tobacco factory built outside the walls, beside the Puerta de Jerez, by military engineers: work began in 1728, production in the summer of 1758 and, according to an inscription, the works ended in 1770. It measures 185 by 147 metres and a moat surrounds it on three sides. Between 1954 and 1956 it passed to the University of Seville, which has its rectorate and the faculties of Geography and History and of Philology there.
