Habsburg and Bourbon Spain

Sevilla

Today: Spain

Years
1492–1833
Role
Port of the Indies trade until 1717

The port on the Guadalquivir became the main link with America when the Reyes Católicos founded the Casa de Contratación de Indias there in 1503, and the population rose from 85,500 in 1565 to 129,400 in 1588. The plague of 1649 killed some 60,000 people, and in 1717 the Casa de Contratación was moved to Cádiz. Still standing from the period are the city hall (1526 to 1573), the Lonja de Mercaderes, now the Archive of the Indies, and the Royal Tobacco Factory, begun in 1728.
