The upper body of the tower is a lantern with bull's-eye windows and a dome of gilded tiles, built in 1760, between 14 June and 27 July, as part of the restoration that followed the Lisbon earthquake of 1755. In 1758 the king had charged Sebastián Van der Borcht with overseeing the tower. Since 1944 it has housed a maritime museum, run by the Navy.

We count visits ourselves, with no cookies and nothing stored on your device. To count people rather than clicks, we keep a one-way code derived from your connection and browser for at most 48 hours and then delete it; what remains is totals per page that identify no one. We never store your IP. We also use Plausible, analytics hosted in the European Union that likewise sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device, to learn which sites send readers here and how many searches are run, never what is searched for.
