Role
Episcopal city of Cardinal Mendoza

A lordship of its bishop, it reached its greatest splendour in the second half of the 15th century under Cardinal Mendoza. In 1489, by a bull of Innocent VIII, Juan López de Medina founded its university, which ceased to be one in 1824, when it became a college dependent on that of Alcalá. It had about 4,300 inhabitants in 1599 and 6,400 in the census of 1797, and in 1796 the process of handing the episcopal lordship over to the Crown began.
