The Romanesque and Gothic cathedral, begun in the 12th century, to which the Renaissance added the cloister, whose rebuilding began in 1505, and the altarpiece-mausoleum of Bishop Fadrique de Portugal, designed by Covarrubias around 1520 and finished in 1539. The main sacristy, or Sacristy of the Heads, with more than three hundred carved heads in its vault, was designed by Covarrubias in 1532 and its Plateresque doorway is of 1573; in the Doncel chapel stands the tomb of Martín Vázquez de Arce, carved between 1486 and 1504. The civil war caused serious damage in 1936, and the lantern tower over the crossing (the cimborrio) is post-war.
