Sóller

Today: Spain

Years
1492–1833
Role
Town of the Sóller valley, raided by corsairs in 1561

Sóller, in a valley of the Tramontana range, was attacked on 11 May 1561 by some 1,600 Algerian corsairs, an event remembered every year at a festival in May. Because of the corsairs, the Torre Picada and the castle of the Puerto de Sóller were built from the 16th century on, and part of the town was fortified, of which a stretch of wall survives beside the parish church.
