The fortress that Charles V had remade in 1535 as a compact building around an arcaded courtyard, with Alonso de Covarrubias, Francisco de Villalpando and Juan de Herrera; the staircase was finished under Philip II. It burned in 1710, 1810 and 1887, and in 1936 the fighting of the siege left it almost destroyed, so most of what is seen now is reconstruction of 1939 to 1957. It houses the Army Museum and the Library of Castilla-La Mancha.

We count visits ourselves, with no cookies and nothing stored on your device. To count people rather than clicks, we keep a one-way code derived from your connection and browser for at most 48 hours and then delete it; what remains is totals per page that identify no one. We never store your IP. We also use Plausible, analytics hosted in the European Union that likewise sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device, to learn which sites send readers here and how many searches are run, never what is searched for.
