Habsburg and Bourbon Spain
Toledo
Today: Spain
- Years
- 1492–1833
- Role
- Seat of the court until 1561 and of the primate
Charles V made it an imperial city and a seat of the Court, and in 1560 it had some 60,000 people, the fourth most populous city of the monarchy. When Philip II decided to move the court to Madrid in 1561 it lost much of its political and social weight, and remained above all an ecclesiastical and cultural centre, with its textile industry in ruin.
