The Romanesque and Gothic cathedral, begun in 1120 and consecrated in 1225, later received dated works. Between 1495 and 1499 the whole Romanesque east end was rebuilt as a triple, flat chevet; in 1530 Bishop Diego de Avellaneda rebuilt the crossing lantern, and the chapel of San Telmo, of 1579, was extended eastward in 1732 and formed the plaza de la Misericordia. The choir of the main chapel dates from 1699.
