The fortress that Admiral Alonso Enríquez rebuilt between 1467 and 1480, according to a document published in 1917, and where Carlos I founded the archive of the Crown of Castile in 1540. Juan de Herrera and Francisco de Mora remodelled it in the 16th century to give it its present look, although the wall, towers and bridges are of the late 15th century. It is now the Archivo General de Simancas, and after the works of 1999 to 2007 the chapel and one research room can be visited.

We count visits ourselves, with no cookies and nothing stored on your device. To count people rather than clicks, we keep a one-way code derived from your connection and browser for at most 48 hours and then delete it; what remains is totals per page that identify no one. We never store your IP. We also use Plausible, analytics hosted in the European Union that likewise sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device, to learn which sites send readers here and how many searches are run, never what is searched for.
